6-inch to 8-inch Cake Pans: Ingredient Ratios

Changing one 6-inch round pan to one 8-inch round pan at the same batter depth gives 8² ÷ 6² = 16/9, approximately 1.7778 times the ingredients. This answer assumes one pan on each side; different pan counts must be included.

Why square the diameter?

Round base area is proportional to diameter squared. The new diameter is 4/3 of the original, so the new area is (4/3)² = 16/9 of the original. Round-pan multiplier = new count × new inside diameter² ÷ (original count × original inside diameter²). Use the same units for both diameters; π and the radius-conversion factor cancel.

Two 6-inch pans to one 8-inch pan needs less batter

Every row assumes the same batter depth. The example ingredient weighs 200 g in the entire original recipe, not in each pan. Weights use the full ratio before rounding to two decimal places; practical weighing depends on the scale and recipe.

1.78, 1.8 and 2 times are different

For one 6-inch pan to one 8-inch pan, 1.78 and 1.8 approximate 16/9. An original 200 g becomes about 355.56 g with the full ratio, 360 g at 1.8 and 400 g at 2. Doubling gives 12.5% more than the equal-depth geometric amount. A specific recipe may require its own adjustment; this page does not validate the baking result.

The calculator uses centimeters

1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 6 inches = 15.24 cm and 8 inches = 20.32 cm. For two 6-inch pans to one 8-inch pan, select round pans, enter original count 2 and diameter 15.24 cm, then new count 1 and diameter 20.32 cm. Measure the actual inside base diameter. A product’s nominal inch label can be approximate; outside dimensions include wall thickness.

Ingredient ratios do not convert baking time or temperature

This applies to round bases with nearly vertical sides, equal batter depth and enough new pan height for the recipe’s headroom. Hollow, irregular or strongly tapered pans need another assessment. Material, shape and recipe affect baking. The ratio does not predict temperature, time, doneness or food safety, and a fractional egg count is not an instruction. Scale recorded ingredient weights and follow the original recipe’s suitability.
